Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan is the secretary of Odhikar (a Bangladesh-based human rights monitoring and awareness group) who was arbitrarily arrested and detained by authorities at his residence in Dhaka at 10.20pm on 10 August, 2013.<\/p>\n

\nDear Ambassador,
\nThe Human Rights and Development Foundation (HRDF) Thailand is concerned about the recent arrest of the prominent human rights defender, Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan and urges the Government of Bangladesh to secure his immediate release.
\nArbitrary arrest and detention in Bangladesh often is accompanied by torture and other inhumane practices, which have directly led to severe injury and even deaths of suspects while in custody.
\nHRDF Thailand and the wider global human rights community are thus deeply concerned for Mr Khan\u2019s safety while in custody. We are also concerned that the arbitrary arrest of Mr. Khan will endanger the security of other human rights defenders in Bangladesh.
\nThe Government of Bangladesh must adhere to its obligations under various human rights treaties, including the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by the General Assembly on December 9, 1998, which calls on it to protect the human rights of its citizens, stating;<\/p>\n

(Article 1) \u201ceveryone has the right, individually and in association with others, to promote and to strive for the protection and realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and international levels\u201d, and;
\n<\/strong>
\n(Article 12.2), that the State shall, \u201ctake all necessary measures to ensure the protection by the competent authorities of everyone, individually and in association with others, against any violence, threats, retaliation, de facto or de jure adverse discrimination, pressure or any other arbitrary action as a consequence of his or her legitimate exercise of his or her rights\u201d;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Consequently, HRDF Thailand urges the Government of Bangladesh to take the following action:
\nImmediately release Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan;
\nGuarantee, in all circumstances, Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan\u2019s physical and psychological integrity, and;
\nEnd all forms of harassment against Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan and his organization, Odhikar.
\nEnsure that principles of rule of law are respected in conducting investigation and enquiry<\/p>\n

Subject: <\/strong>Arbitrary arrest and detention of human rights defender<\/p>\n

\nDear Ambassador,
\nThe Human Rights and Development Foundation (HRDF) Thailand is concerned about the recent arrest of the prominent human rights defender, Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan and urges the Government of Bangladesh to secure his immediate release.
\nArbitrary arrest and detention in Bangladesh often is accompanied by torture and other inhumane practices, which have directly led to severe injury and even deaths of suspects while in custody.
\nHRDF Thailand and the wider global human rights community are thus deeply concerned for Mr Khan\u2019s safety while in custody. We are also concerned that the arbitrary arrest of Mr. Khan will endanger the security of other human rights defenders in Bangladesh.
\nThe Government of Bangladesh must adhere to its obligations under various human rights treaties, including the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, adopted by the General Assembly on December 9, 1998, which calls on it to protect the human rights of its citizens, stating;<\/p>\n

(Article 1) \u201ceveryone has the right, individually and in association with others, to promote and to strive for the protection and realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms at the national and international levels\u201d, and;
\n<\/strong>
\n(Article 12.2), that the State shall, \u201ctake all necessary measures to ensure the protection by the competent authorities of everyone, individually and in association with others, against any violence, threats, retaliation, de facto or de jure adverse discrimination, pressure or any other arbitrary action as a consequence of his or her legitimate exercise of his or her rights\u201d;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Consequently, HRDF Thailand urges the Government of Bangladesh to take the following action:
\nImmediately release Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan;
\nGuarantee, in all circumstances, Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan\u2019s physical and psychological integrity, and;
\nEnd all forms of harassment against Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan and his organization, Odhikar.
\nEnsure that principles of rule of law are respected in conducting investigation and enquiry<\/p>\n
